MINDSET: BE THE COLOUR
The first step is to put some time and effort into really thinking about the colour you would like to dye your hair. It can be helpful to check out online colour resources such as the ones here on the Ellustore website, review colour swatches, fashion magazines and even consult with a stylist. The key is to think about it. Think it over and even visualize which red colour will make you feel confident, cool and sexy. There are many additional factors to ponder including whether or not you are colouring your hair for the first time or plan to dye hair that has already been coloured.back to menu ↑
50 SHADES OF RED? ALMOST
With Red hair especially, shade is a very important factor to consider. Are you looking for a smokin’ super hot temperature or a more cool red? There are literally dozens of colours and shades too choose from. The spectrum of red ranges from warm shades(coppers, auburns) to cool shades(burgundy, cherry, red velvet.)back to menu ↑
HAIR AND SKIN TYPE
Skin tones matters. More so with red hair than any other color. For this reason you need to think about what would look best with your skin tone as well as the length of your hair, cut and style. If you are pale you will want a warm hair color. Darker skin and dark complexions are complemented best by cool colors.back to menu ↑
The next step is to make sure you have the right hair colour product.
There are three core Goldwell Elumen red colours and dyes we suggest:
- Elumen Red (Goldwell Elumen RR@all hair colour)
- Elumen Red Violet (Goldwell Elumen RV@all hair colour)
- Elumen Pink (Goldwell Elumen PK@all hair colour)
Elumen Red is the go-to color and one of the most popular. Elumen Pink is for when you want something more adventurous, and Elumen Red Violet is the “in-between” red colour.
What’s great about Elumen is that the dye is ready to use. No need to spend extra prep time in this area, or buy additional serums or developers. And, Elumen colors can be mixed freely. This is something that you can’t do with other hair colouring products.back to menu ↑
PREPARATION & TOOLS
Proper preparation and tools are extremely vital to the home hair colouring and dyeing process.
- Make sure you have the right space. An area with enough room to lay everything out and work freely.
- Make sure you have all the tools and materials you will need.
- Make sure you have planned for damage control … placing towels or newspapers down on carpets, tables, sinks, etc …
- It’s important to protect your skin and your clothes from getting splattered with dye. Applying Vaseline pre-colouring can help in this regard.
- Gloves are a MUST, and it is a good idea to use clothes you are not worried about getting permanently covered with dye. As the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
- Make sure you have your tools assembled and laid out prior to opening up your colouring product. A timer is necessary. You need to have a brush to apply the dye, and it can be helpful to have the Elumen Applicator Comb.
- Once you are set-up, simply section off your hair and apply your dye.
TO SHAMPOO OR NOT TOO SHAMPOO: POST-COLOUR MAINTENANCE
With Elumen dyes you want to wash your hair with shampoo two times once the treatment is complete. This is specific to Elumen colouring only. Once your hair has been thoroughly towel-dried, it’s a great idea to apply Elumen Lock for a total of five minutes. In the beginning, it may be a good idea to only wash your hair once every three days as washing and shampooing can affect the colour.
In conclusion, we’ve covered the core practices and tips for safely and effectively home–dyeing your hair red with Goldwell Elumen hair colours for a beautiful, long-lasting colour. Mindset, shade, skin tone, product, preparation, tools and post-dye maintenance are the keys to the process. Good luck!
